WE HAVE BEEN WRESTLING WITH CONTENT FOR OVER 30 YEARS
The time has come for us to pull together all that we have learned in that time - and to collaborate on an approach to content that will be genuinely future-ready.
This is a good time & place to start...

Content is potential information
It is what we prepare in advance so that
we can perform highly effective
information transactions

CONTENT MEANS BUSINESS
We focus on content for good reason. The systematic design, management, and use of digital content assets helps organizations to do many things: manage their technology investments, reach their customers wherever they may be, and to facilitate the flow of knowledge within & between teams.
Let's Talk about Engineering Content
There are several sides to 'engineering content'.
It is about bringing the discipline of engineering to bear on what we call 'content'.
It is about the content that is an integral part of engineered products and processes.
It is also about the content of engineering, what we use to ground & guide the engineering process itself.
All of these point towards the fact that almost everything in the modern world is, or should be, engineered - consciously designed to be effective, scalable, sustainable, resilient, usable, and valuable.

Engineering is the discipline of designing & building systems that are scalable and sustainable in the face of complexity
We engineer content so that we can
build a better world

CONTENT IS EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS
The content we are interested in is the content that is produced by people working together.
It is through this collaboration that content becomes an organizational asset. It becomes what the organization 'says'. It becomes an expression of organizational knowledge and intent. And the evolution of this content is, in a material sense, how an organization 'learns'.
This is why content is hard. But this is also why content is valuable.

The purpose of engineering content is to help people to communicate with machines
That is, to communicate using machines
and to communicate interactively
with machines

THE FUTURE OF CONTENT
Engineering Content is really about helping organizations to do big things...the sorts of things that the world needs us to do and to do well. Engineering the next generation of solutions will depend on our ability to understand and optimize large-scale systems. This is where digital content ecosystems have a vital role to play - by delivering increased efficiency, improving operational performance, accelerating business & technology innovation and, most importantly of all, helping organizations manage what we need to build.
Engineering Content is Important Work
What makes it important is the fact that content, when it is grounded, authentic, portable, and processable, is the digital expression of what an organization knows.
And to live up to its potential, content must flow. It must move seamlessly between people, applications, channels, and organizations. It must exhibit radical portability and processability. It must therefore be genuinely digital.
This doesn't happen by chance. No, it is something we must engineer.
And when content flows, it can reach machines and provide them with what they need - clear direction & concrete points of reference.
This is important. We need to do it together.
